How to spend your day in the Athenian Riviera

1. Temple of Poseidon, Cape Sounion

Since the Athens Riviera ends in Sounio, you should not forget to visit this spectacular site, home to the Doric temple consecrated to the god of the sea, Poseidon. The temple, offering all-encompassing views over the sea, stands on top of the Cape and is an ideal location to watch as the sun sets over the bay.

2. Vouliagmeni Lake

Only 20 km from the city center, Vouliagmeni Lake makes for an enchanting break from the beach. Surrounded by cliffs and incredible nature, the lake offers warm waters (between 22–29°C), which are known for their healing virtues. The fish that nibble at your toes always provide a surreal snap and the colorful rock formations provide a dramatic backdrop.

3. Watch the sunset by the sea

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre provides all kind of photogenic options. Surrounding the shiny national opera house and library, there’s kayaking on the canal, bikes for hire, petanque and playgrounds, free concerts, and festivals. With its commanding position overlooking Faliro bay, it’s also a great spot to shoot the city skyline or capture the sunset.

4. Mikrolimano

Near Stavros Niarchos, you will discover the smaller and most photographed port of Athens, Mikrolimano. Its picturesque marina is an attraction to all those who wish to combine a beautiful walk with fresh fish, coffee, or intense nightlife.
